Goals:
Practice the present perfect, learn about the French Revolution, gain an
Appreciation for literature
Task
One: Read this short passage about the French Revolution
The
French Revolution 1978-1979 was a politically unstable time. The Kings and
Queens that ruled France were very rich and the common people were very poor. The
picture exemplifies the “baroque” style that was typical of the time when
royalty used ornaments and lavishness to show off their wealth. Outside of this
castle, the French people were starving.
The
French people decided that they were not going to suffer anymore. They revolted
and on 1792 they claimed France as a Republic, meaning that it would no longer
be ruled by Kings and Queens but by the French people. The French people
created a governing assembly and published The Declaration of the Rights of Man
and of the Citizen, a template for the constitution. It also marked a time for
women’s rights.
The
song takes place during the French Revolution in the midst of fighting. Eponine
is a young women who loves Marius. Marius, however, is in love with someone
else. Eponine gets hurt trying to take a letter for Marius. Marius finds her. It
is Raining.

MARIUS
Good God, what are you doing?
'Ponine, have you no fear?
Have you seen my beloved?
Why 1 (come) back here?
EPONINE
I took the letter like you said
I 2 (met) her father at the door
He 3 (say) he would give it
I don't think I can stand anymore what does this phrase mean?
MARIUS
Eponine, what's wrong?
There's something wet upon your hair
Eponine, you 4 (to be) hurt
You need some help
Oh, God, it's everywhere!
EPONINE
Don't you fret, M'sieur Marius
I 5 (feel neg) any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now
You're here, that's all I need to know
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
And rain will make the flowers grow.
MARIUS
But you will live, 'Ponine - dear God above,
If I could heal your wounds with words of love.
EPONINE
Just hold me now, and let it be.
Shelter me, comfort me
MARIUS
You would live a hundred years
If I could show you how
I won't desert you now...
EPONINE
The rain can't hurt me now
This rain will wash away what's past
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
I'll sleep in your embrace at last.
The rain that brings you here
Is Heaven-blessed!
The skies 6 (to begin) to clear
And I'm at rest
A breath away from where you are
7 (to come) home from so far
So don't you fret, M'sieur Marius
I don't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now
That's all I need to know
And you will keep me safe
And you will keep me close
MARIUS(in counterpoint)
Hush-a-bye, dear Eponine,
You won't feel any pain
A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt you now
I'm here
I will stay with you
Till you are sleeping
